At Sharp Grossmont Hospital, our Limb Preservation Program brings together experts in podiatry, wound care, vascular surgery and other specialties to help people at risk of limb loss heal and avoid amputation whenever possible.
We care for patients with diabetes, poor circulation, infections and active wounds using a coordinated approach that focuses on early diagnosis, personalized treatment and long-term healing. By treating the underlying cause of the problem — not just the symptoms — we help patients preserve mobility, maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.
As the only comprehensive limb preservation program serving East County San Diego, we're proud to offer advanced, coordinated care close to home.
Limb preservation is a comprehensive approach to caring for patients who are at risk for amputation due to peripheral vascular disease (PVD), diabetes, infection, chronic wounds or other conditions that reduce blood flow to the legs and feet. The goal is to identify problems early, treat the underlying condition and preserve as much function and mobility as possible.
The program is designed for patients who have conditions that increase their risk of limb loss, including:
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and other vascular diseases
Nonhealing wounds or foot ulcers
Foot redness, discoloration or gangrene
Leg or foot swelling
Limb infections
Early treatment can make a significant difference in preventing serious complications. Talk with your doctor if you have:
A wound that is not healing
Foot or leg swelling
Redness or changes in skin color
New drainage or signs of infection
Increasing pain in your foot or leg
Diabetes and a new foot wound or ulcer
Prompt evaluation can help prevent complications and improve healing.
Depending on your needs, your care plan may include:
Advanced imaging to evaluate blood vessels
Specialized testing to assess blood flow and tissue oxygenation
Minimally invasive vascular surgery to improve circulation
Podiatry and plastic surgery procedures
Our program brings together specialists from vascular surgery, podiatry, wound care, hyperbaric medicine, plastic surgery, diabetes care and other specialties to create a coordinated treatment plan tailored to each patient.
Patients also work with a dedicated limb preservation navigator who helps coordinate appointments, facilitate communication among specialists and guide patients throughout their care. This team-based approach helps reduce delays in treatment and provides seamless, personalized care.
Many wounds caused by diabetes or poor circulation may appear minor at first but can quickly become serious if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve healing, reduce complications and help prevent amputation.
If you have diabetes, poor circulation, a nonhealing wound or another condition that may put you at risk for limb loss, talk with your primary care doctor or specialist about whether the Limb Preservation Program is right for you.
Most patients are referred by their primary care physician, podiatrist, vascular specialist or wound care provider. If you have questions about the program or would like more information, call 619-740-6400. Our team can help determine the next steps and coordinate your care.
