Stroke treatment in San Diego.
Our stroke specialists are ready to care for you. At Sharp Grossmont, we provide:
The most advanced stroke treatment technologies, close to home
We have the most advanced imaging and surgical technologies, such as our bi-plane cardiac catheter lab operating room in our Burr Heart & Vascular Center, to perform complex procedures, including brain aneurysm clipping, mechanical thrombectomy, vascular malformation surgery, and carotid endarterectomy-procedures used to repair and restore brain function after a stroke.
Highly trained stroke experts available 24/7
We are the only hospital in San Diego County with a dedicated, 24-hour, on-site stroke code nurse. Moreover, our 24/7 multidisciplinary stroke care team consists of specialized stroke doctors, such as neurologists, neurointerventional radiologists, neurosurgeons, stroke specialist nurse practitioners, specially trained stroke nurses and rehabilitation, lab and pharmacy services.
Evidence-based, standardized, high-quality stroke care
At Sharp Grossmont, we are able to address a patient’s risk factors for stroke, and provide personalized, proven treatments, along with daily patient and family education. Our detailed approach leads to lower-than-average mortality and injury scores when compared to the national average.
Community-centered stroke recognition education
Collaborating with the county’s Emergency Medical Services, our health education staff educates the community on how to recognize stroke symptoms and get help immediately, which can increase the chance for better outcomes. More than 70% of patients knew to call 9-1-1 when experiencing stroke symptoms.
Exceeding stroke patient outcomes.
On average, Sharp Grossmont Hospital treats more than 900 patients with stroke a year. Our patients are highly satisfied with the treatments and services they receive, based on a 97% satisfaction rate from an internal survey. Our stroke care program follows rigorous national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients:
- Nearly 100% of patients arriving at Sharp Grossmont within the first four hours of noticing stroke symptoms were able to receive medications to quickly dissolve clots that cause stroke.
- Sharp Grossmont has one of the fastest door-to-medicine times — 12 minutes — for administering clot-dissolving medications to patients.
- Our patients’ complication rate from clot-dissolving medications is 3%, which is below the national benchmark of 6.4%.
"As a Comprehensive Stroke Center, our community has access to the latest technologies and specialists."
— Dr. Ryan Viets, interventional neuroradiologist
In collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, Comprehensive Stroke Center designation by The Joint Commission is the highest certification for hospitals with abilities to treat complex stroke cases.
